Tree climbing might be an advantage by providing: access to arboreal food, a place to cache food, and to avoid predators; coyotes, bobcats, cougars, and raptors (great horned owls and golden eagles). Arboreal escape routes and a willingness to live in proximity to humans are thought to reduce death due to terrestrial predators.
