Other gray fox identifying features include multi-colored guard hairs, rufous (rust) coloration on the face, bodies between 31-44 inches long weighing 7-13 pounds, and front paw claws with a distinctive curvature; all characteristics difficult to detect from these infrared, nighttime photos.

 

One undeniable method of identification would have been to photograph them in a tree as they are the only canid able to climb trees. Able to rotate forearms to ‘hug’ a tree trunk, the grey fox can use their hind limbs to push upward. Once in the tree they are able to jump from branch to branch. To come down they can climb down tail first or run down the truck of the tree.
