The photo of this scraggly tree tells the story of land use in the United States. Listed as a Vermont State Champion Tree this Osage orange, Maclura pomifera, is found on the campus on Middlebury College. The Champion Tree designation, alone, marks the tree as worthy of special appreciation.  The nonprofit organization, American Forests, establishes the rules and records the official National Register of Big Trees throughout the United States.
