Suburban Foxes

 

Having observed many red foxes while taking late night, suburban walks with the family dogs it was a surprise – the eMammal images captured for Smithsonian research were really gray foxes, Urocyon cinffeoargenteus. The difference between the two species would be much easier to detect in the daytime but the distinctive black in combination with the absence of a white-tipped tail suggests this individual must be a gray fox.
