Grey foxes breed between mid-January and March. With a gestation period of 53 days the 2-7 pups are born between March and April. The blind, hairless young are born in a den; the cavities of stumps, trees, in rock crevices, under sheds, even in trees. Young are weaned by 10 weeks and begin hunting with their parents by 3 months. In the fall the families disperse remaining solitary for the rest of the year.
