First the trees must be native species as determined by authorities such as the United States Department of Agriculture or the Integrated Information System, an international recognized authority providing the most stable and accepted classifications for conservative biodiversity comparisons.  American Forests recognizes more than 870 species and varieties as eligible for the National Register of Big Trees as North American native species.
