Fossil records indicate fungi invaded the before the first vertebrates crawled out of the sea. Suggesting fungi were vital in plants’ colonization of land most trees and agricultural crops depend on or benefit from mycorrhizae. Fungi break down dead organic tissue, returning nutrients to their ecosystems. Without them the earth would be suffocated by the litter from malnourished plants and that is magical.
