While some fungi do cause disease and death, others are beneficial and necessary. Using enzymes to break down its food the fungus absorbs and processes nutrients. Plants profit from the symbiotic relationship; fungi (mycorrihizae) supply essential nutrients to plant roots in return for sugars manufactured by the plant. Other fungi are responsible for the bubbles in bread and champagne. Still others produce important antibiotics.
