Sharing a number of breeding traits with alligators, female Eastern painted turtles make their nests adjacent to water preferring sunny sites. Incubation temperatures dictate the sex of the offspring. Female hatchlings are produced with temperatures in the upper 80°’s while males result from temperatures in the upper 70’s. Temperatures in between (84°) produces half female and half male. Mating occurs from March to mid-June, nesting May to mid-July, with hatching in late summer to early fall.
