At the end of summer the last generation of monarchs does not reproduce right away; instead they migrate thousands of miles south. Monarchs on the east of the Rock Mountains traveling to central Mexico while those living in the west overwinter in California. The migrating generation lives between 8-9 months. Beginning in March these adults begin laying eggs along the return route north before dying. Their great-great grandchildren are the ones that will repeat the trip next winter.
