A common species of bird, the hawk is long-lived. One Michigan bird is recorded reaching 30 years 8 months.
Hawks have one mate until death separates them.
They are predators reported to eat mice, voles, shrews, moles, squirrels, chipmunks, rats, rabbits, opossums, muskrats, cats, skunks, snakes, turtles, frogs, lizards, salamanders, toads, bats, carrion, and many species of birds.
As apex predators hawks offer a stabilizing influence on the composition and distribution of the neighborhood wildlife.
Hawks tolerate a range of habitats (rural, suburban, urban, desert, grasslands, fields and pastures, parks, forests, and cities).
